By Christmas Eve, I’d been stuck in the house for two whole days. Sharn was away with her family for the holiday, and Amber wouldn’t be getting home until the next day. I was stoked at the thought of seeing Amber. It had been too long. I also wanted to visit Julia. After working at the bookstore right until I left for USF, she had become like family.

Finally plucking up the courage to leave the house, I headed into town. Pushing the door open, I smiled, spying Julia’s homemade cupcakes displayed on an intricately detailed vintage stand. The store was quiet, and I hoped Julia would be able to grab a quick coffee with me so we could catch up.

“Can I get a cupcake and mocha latte, please?” I smiled at the server.

I wasn’t familiar with the girl placing the cupcake on the plate. Spotting Julia serving a customer at the book counter, I waved and pointed at a chair, hoping she would understand my message. As I nibbled at the cupcake, I drifted into the comfort of my surrounds. I had grown to love the ambience of the coffee house during the year I had worked there.

“Liv.” A silky voice drifted into my conscious and my eyes followed until they were looking at Ethan.

“Hey, Ethan. What a surprise.”

It wasn’t a surprise. I was starting to get used to his tendency to just appear at the most random of times. It was like we searched each other out—like he was drawn to me as much as I was to him. I silently chastised myself, trying to banish the thoughts from my mind.

“Can we talk?”

I motioned to the empty chair across from me. Julia was still serving a steady stream of customers so I could probably spare ten minutes. It felt a little awkward sitting with Ethan in person. Texting was one thing, but being face-to-face was entirely different. My body shrank into itself as I wrapped my arms around my waist like a security blanket.

“How are you doing Liv, after umm, you know… after what happened?” Ethan looked as uncomfortable as I felt. His cheeks were stained with a slight blush, and his usual intense eyes mellowed with his question.

“I’m okay. Still a bit shaken but I guess that’s to be expected.” I didn’t really know what else to say. It wasn’t as if we had a great track record for having big heart-felt conversations.

“Yeah, I bet. Hell, when Kade called me I almost drove up there. I can’t explain it Liv, but I was angry. I wanted to rip that fuck to shreds for putting his hands on you.”

I was stunned at Ethan’s outburst. I’d never seen him this way. He was always so cool, calm, and collected. His eyes darkened, and his jaw tensed. He looked all kinds of serious and even a little bit scary.

“Yeah, well it would’ve been a wasted journey. Kade and Corey were quite the gents, and Staci is like an angry pit bull when she’s pissed.
